Luke 9:37-43
“The Rebuke of Jesus”
37 Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him. 38 Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child. 39 “And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him. 40 “So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the majesty of God.
Introduction
We live in a dangerous world in which various entities seek to gain access, influence and control us for their own evil purposes. Many times this does not turn out well for us. The good news is that Jesus sees our plight and is able to rescue us from these situations. He is also able to safeguard us from these kinds of problems. Painting - light to dark
1. People
a. Father
b. Son
c. Evil demon spirit, unclean
d. Disciples - 3 and 9
e. Jesus
2. Purposes
a. Father - to have a good life for his son and the rest of the family
b. Son - to live as a normal boy
c. Evil, unclean demon spirit - to steal, kill and destroy, into the water and fire, bruising, to make a mockery of God’s creation, to degrade and defile, to make life miserable, hell on earth.
d. Disciples - to fulfill their calling to cast out demons, set the boy free
e. Jesus - to make sure ministry to hurting people is happening, and in the right way, ensuring the success of His kingdom.
3. Problems
a. Father - distressed because of what the devil is doing to his son, knowing that somehow he or someone else opened a door for the demon to have access to his son. Some agreement with the enemy, some habitual sin, a generational curse which remained unbroken.
b. Son - must have been horrible for him to be possessed, to go out of control and to be thrown into dangerous situations, foaming at the mouth, battered and bruised
c. Evil demon spirit - even though he gained access to this boy, and was able to wreak havoc in his life for years, the demon has now been exposed, and the dad is trying to do something about the problem, bringing the boy closer to Jesus, and therefore brining the unclean spirit closer to the Son of God. Big problem.
d. Disciples - trying and failing, even though they had been commissioned and had had past success. They tried, but were powerless and had to watch as this demon continued to kick the daylights out of this child.
e. Jesus - has a problem in that a dad has opened an evil door, and as a result, a boy has become possessed. And that some of His guys, whom He commissioned and empowered, seem powerless to do anything about it. Calls them faithless and perverse (distorted, twisted).
4. Prescription
a. Father - brought the boy to Jesus, Jesus gone so tried the 9, then back to Jesus when He came down from the mountain
b. Son - being brought to Jesus, but the demon was tearing him up the closer they got
c. Evil demon spirit - forced to submit to the Son of God
d. Disciples - glad to see Jesus, wanting to watch and learn
e. Jesus - to use His power and authority for it’s intended purpose, to destroy the works of the devil, and set people free to live a new life.
5. Power With the power and authority of His Word, Jesus rebuked the dad, the disciples and the demon
41 Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.
a. Dad - faithless and perverse distorted, twisted
b. Disciples - faithless and perverse distorted, twisted
Matthew 17
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
21 “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
c. Demon - the personal rebuke of Jesus, the Son of God, that what he had been doing was wrong, and to leave this boy alone
6. Product
42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.
43 And they were all amazed at the majesty of God.
a. Deliverance
b. Healing
c. Reunification
d. Amazement and worship
This is what happens every time the Kingdom of God comes into a dark area, takes authority, rebukes the evil, causing it to leave. Light comes into darkness.
7. Protection
We live in a dangerous world in which various entities seek to gain access, influence and control us for their own evil purposes. Many times this does not turn out well for us. The good news is that Jesus sees our plight and is able to rescue us from these situations. He is also able to safeguard us from these kinds of problems.
How can we protect ourselves?
a. Don’t open doors, signal agreement, allow access, let things get faithless and perverted, distorted, twisted. Hold your cards close to your chest.
b. If we have let our standards down, allowed access to the forces of evil, we need to regain that ground, send a message that we agree only with God, and are loyal only to Him, that we and our children are covered by a blood covenant with God. To slam the door in the devil’s face, taking the welcome mat back inside as we do.
c. Faith - the theme of Jesus’ ministry. If we trust Him, any good thing is possible.
d. Prayer and fasting - when things get really tough, there is still a key to victory.
This is our protection. As for me and my house we will serve the LORD.
Application to the World - why all the turmoil, even in our own country? The devil has been in charge in some areas for a long time, people’s ideas are twisted and distorted. They have sent signals that they agree with the devil and not God.
The devil comes to steal, kill, destroy. If you put the devil in charge, things are not going to go well. Prince of Persia vs Michael. Because this is the Middle East.
What’s the prescription? Jesus, trusting and being loyal to Him alone. Faith, not opening doors to distorted, twisted perverse things. Prayer and fasting to cast out powerful evil forces on many levels. This will be the final outcome:
JESUS SHALL REIGN
JESUS SHALL REIGN WHER'ER THE SUN
DOES HIS SUCCESSIVE JOURNEYS RUN,
HIS KINGDOM SPREAD FROM SHORE TO SHORE
TILL MOONS SHALL WAX AND WANE NO MORE.
FROM NORTH TO SOUTH THE PRINCES MEET
TO PAY THEIR HOMAGE AT HIS FEET,
WHILE WESTERN EMPIRES OWN THEIR LORD
AND SAVAGE TRIBES ATTEND HIS WORD.
TO HIM SHALL ENDLESS PRAYER BE MADE
AND ENDLESS PRAISES CROWN HIS HEAD;
HIS NAME LIKE SWEET PERFUME SHALL RISE
WITH EV'RY MORNING SACRIFICE.
PEOPLE AND REALMS OF EV'RY TONGUE
DWELL ON HIS LOVE WITH SWEETEST SONG,
AND INFANT VOICES SHALL PROCLAIM
THEIR EARLY BLESSINGS ON HIS NAME.
LET EVERY CREATURE RISE AND BRING
HIS GRATEFUL HONORS TO OUR KING
ANGELS DESCEND WITH SONGS AGAIN
AND EARTH REPEAT THE LOUD AMEN!
Conclusion If we see things out of control, destructive, in a life, family, community, nation. Who you gonna call? Jesus. I believe we can shut the devil down. We give him way too much access, opportunity to ruin people’s lives, even communities, tribes and nations. Let Jesus be LORD.
