Galatians 5:23
The Fruit of the Spirit

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Introduction People today disagree and debate many issues, but these 9 things most people agree on. Many laws against many things - no laws against the Fruit of the Spirit.

1. The Spirit - Which Spirit? The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus.

2. The Fruit - How does the Holy Spirit have an influence on our lives, to produce fruit in us? The Holy Spirit comes into us, causes us to think and act like Jesus.

LOVE - agape, self sacrificing love, expecting nothing in return

JOY - not temporary happiness, but the deep currents of joy.

PEACE - freedom from turmoil, conflict, strife. Peace with God, others, self. Even in a storm, you can have peace if you trust the Captain.

PATIENCE - ability to wait it out. Faith in the future, God’s will.

KINDNESS - being respectful, treating people right, even if it’s difficult or they don’t deserve it

GOODNESS - fulfilling the purpose for which you were created

FAITHFULNESS - doing what you said you would do, being true to your calling

GENTLENESS - handling someone with awareness and sensitivity

SELF CONTROL - seeing the big picture, not the whims of the moment

3. The Nature of Jesus - This is what Jesus is like.

LOVE - selflessness, self sacrifice, ultimate on the Cross. He defines agape.

JOY - joy as He taught, healed, delivered, blessed, died “for the joy set before Him”

PEACE - calmness, assurance, faith, in control. Prince of Peace. Peace on Earth.

PATIENCE - bearing with those He was trying to teach. Slow to anger, rich in love.

KINDNESS - all the healing, deliverance, help, water into wine. “I am willing, be healed.”

GOODNESS - fulfilling His calling, place as Messiah

FAITHFULNESS - To His Father, to His calling, to us, even to the Cross.

GENTLENESS - A bruised reed he will not break...

SELF CONTROL - “Not my will, but yours be done.”

4. Our Fallen Human Tendencies “Where’s the beef?” “Where’s the love, joy...

LOVE - selfishness, no self sacrifice, me, I, mine

JOY - from a bottle, a pill or a needle, or daydreaming about winning the lotto, living vicariously on movies, TV

PEACE - turmoil with God, others, self. Upset, worried, anxious about many things.

PATIENCE - instant gratification. The main reason for our econmic mess.

KINDNESS - unkindness “Practice random kindness, senseless acts of beauty.” “Practice random senseless acts.”

GOODNESS - good is called evil, and evil, good

FAITHFULNESS - unfaithfulness, so many broken promises, hurting victims

GENTLENESS - harshness, no concern for fragile condition, brutality of body, soul, spirit

SELF CONTROL - out of control

This is what happens when people refuse to let Jesus into their lives, don’t feel they need Him or the power of the Holy Spirit.

5. The Results of the Spirit of Jesus in our Lives

LOVE - Taking a bullet or a grenade for your buddies.

JOY - “Yo tengo goso”

PEACE - When I realized Mark was gone, there was overwhelming peace.

PATIENCE - The 31st time a drunk was saved, it worked.

KINDNESS - In the hardware store - I was upset, kindness melted me.

GOODNESS - those who are fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.

FAITHFULNESS - taking somebody back after they have badly hurt you.

GENTLENESS - Awareness of someone’s condition - realizing what they are going through.

SELF CONTROL - seeing a bigger picture than your emotions at the moment.

Conclusions This is what happens when the Spirit of God comes to dwell within you. You abide in Him, and He abides in you, and you ask for His help when you need it, and receive the power to live a good life in this world.
